The employees begin work at the factory in July and aren't guaranteed future employment when their two-year contracts end. They'll start at $18 an hour compared with the typical $26 an hour.
The temporary workers are allowed under a provision in the company's 2003 labor contract. The arrangement is unique to Belvidere, but could be used elsewhere.
The workers are represented by the United Auto Workers union. They will build the new Dodge Caliber hatchback and Jeep Compass crossover alongside 2,650 full-time UAW-represented employees.
