The school board says our current school choice program is unpredictable, complex, and down right expensive. They say a change needs to be made.
Tonight the Student Assignment Committee began the daunting task of creating a new system that is predictable, reasonable and responsible. The school board gave the committee an outline and some criteria. Now it's up to them to come up with the rest. The committee chairman says they are focusing on one particular aspect.
"They certainly want predictability. They want students and parents to know that when the student enters elementary school, where they're going to be going to middle and high school," says Joel Cowen, chairman of the Student Assignment Committee.
The committee will present its findings to the board in the middle of August. The committee will meet again on June 29th at 12:15 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, room S-235. The meeting is open to the public.
