UI Gets $251,000 Grant for Hog Farm Odor Control Study

Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced the grant Thursday in Urbana. The money comes from an antitrust settlement reached in 2000 with several vitamin manufacturers who were accused of fixing prices.

Madigan says some of the vitamins in question were used in animal feed.

The university will use the money to field test several techniques and products being promoted for controlling the foul odors that often come from hog farms. Animal sciences professor Michael Ellis says the grant allows for larger-scale testing than could be done at the university's own research farm.

Ellis says the testing will be conducted over the next two years.
