Infrastructure Grant for Freeport Development

The funding is included in the 2007 Transportation-Treasury- Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill the U.S. House passed Wednesday night. The funds must still be approved by the Senate and signed into law by the president. Manzullo will work with Illinois' U.S. Senators to make sure the funding is protected throughout the process.

The industrial park has several major infrastructure needs as it prepares to welcome its high-profile developments. The federal funding will primarily be used to develop the water and sewer systems at the site.

Mill Race Crossing will be home to Freeport Farms, the Trim-Rite pork processing plant that could create up to 800 jobs. In addition, Blackhawk Bio-Fuels, LLC has plans to build a 30 million gallon per year biodiesel processing facility that will create up to 30 hi-tech jobs and provide a new market for our soybean farmers.

"The Mill Race Crossing Industrial Park is critical to the future of Freeport and Stephenson County," Manzullo said. "Freeport Farms and Blackhawk Bio-Fuels will ignite further development in the region and provide good-paying jobs to those in and around Freeport. This is an important project for the region, and that's why I sought and secured funding for it."

Stephenson County Board Chairman John Blum added, "Mill Race Crossing is a dynamic effort by Stephenson County to produce new jobs and new investment in our region. This financial assistance secured by Congressman Manzullo will be invested to support value-added agriculture, renewable energy, and manufacturing projects in NW Illinois."
