MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) – A huge drug bust shocks a Machesney Park neighborhood after the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department arrested twin brothers yesterday. Inside their home, 3,000 pounds of marijuana was found inside their home and some say it’s surprising to hear what was going on right next door.

It’s a seemingly quiet neighborhood on Zenith Parkway in Machesney Park, which is why neighbors say they had no idea what was going on behind closed doors.

“Bales of marijuana, two vans full,” explained neighbor Lisa Zerga. “just the bricks of drugs that were coming out was just something you’d see in a movie.”

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department raided the home Wednesday night where detectives say they found 3,000 pounds of marijuana, worth more than one million dollars. Investigators say two brothers, 21-year-old Rogelio and Erasmo Mendez-Barreto are now in jail for the crime.

“They were always like to themselves, I mean, nobody really knew who they were or anything.”

Drugs aren’t the only thing police found. Officers also raided a home on Shillington Drive and found large amounts of cash. The house is about 5 miles away from the one on Zenith Parkway.

“You just don’t know and to see the mass amount and not even knowing and it’s right next door, it’s scary.”

Detectives are still trying to determine how much money was inside the home.

“You don’t really know your neighbors when you look at their mug-shot and you’ve never seen them before.

Both men are charged with criminal drug conspiracy. There is no word yet on whether there are other suspects involved.
