$2.9M Announced for Illinois Housing Programs

STATELINE (WIFR) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) has announced that communities across Illinois will receive a total of $2,953,707 in grant funding through two programs administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency (PH-FSS) Program and the Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program develop strategies which help families learn skills, gain experience, and obtain employment in the hopes of leading to economic independence and housing self-sufficiency.

“These programs will help families gain the skills necessary to land good-paying jobs and affordable housing,” Durbin said. “This federal funding will give local development agencies across the state the ability to help people in their communities who need it the most.”

ROSS Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program

The Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency (PH-FSS) Program promotes the development of local strategies to coordinate the use of assistance under the public housing program with public and private resources, enable participating families to increase earned income and financial literacy, reduce or eliminate the need for welfare assistance, and make progress toward achieving economic independence and housing self-sufficiency. The following communities will receive ROSS Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency funding:

- Rockford Housing Authority (Rockford, Illinois): $68,964 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the City of Freeport (Freeport, Illinois): $69,000 in funding;
- Winnebago County Housing Authority (Rockford, Illinois): $69,000 in funding.
- Chicago Housing Authority (Chicago, Illinois): $57,692 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Elgin (Elgin, Illinois): $69,000 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Greene County (White Hall, Illinois): $22,955 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Henry County (Kewanee, Illinois): $48,918 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the City of East St. Louis (East St. Louis, Illinois): $69,000 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the County of Lake (Grayslake, Illinois): $69,000 in funding;
- Macoupin County Housing Authority (Carlinville, Illinois): $42,616 in funding;
- Menard County Housing Authority (Petersburg, Illinois): $29,160 in funding;
- Peoria Housing Authority (Peoria, Illinois): $49,515 in funding;
- Rock Island Housing Authority (Rock Island, Illinois): $65,000 in funding;
- Springfield Housing Authority (Springfield, Illinois): $39,000 in funding; and

Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program

The Housing Choice Voucher (HVC) Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program encourages communities to develop local strategies to help voucher families obtain employment that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency. These public housing agencies work with participating FSS families and give them the skills to enable them to obtain employment that pays a living wage. The following communities will receive HVC Family Self-Sufficiency funding:

- Rockford Housing Authority (Rockford, Illinois): $129,776 in funding;
- Winnebago County Housing Authority (Rockford, Illinois): $130,699 in funding.
- Chicago Housing Authority (Chicago, Illinois): $726,441 in funding;
- DuPage Housing Authority (Wheaton, Illinois): $88,710 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Elgin (Elgin, Illinois): $66,194 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Henry County (Kewanee, Illinois) : $43,063 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Joliet (Joliet, Illinois): $63,898 in funding;
- Housing Authority of Marion County (Centralia, Illinois): $43,994 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the City of Bloomington (Bloomington, Illinois): $141,317 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the County of Cook (Chicago, Illinois: $181,691 in funding;
- Housing Authority of the County of Lake (Grayslake, Illinois): $150,977 in funding;
- Kankakee County Housing Authority (Kankakee, Illinois): $42,552 in funding;
- Madison County Housing Authority (Collinsville, Illinois): $67,839 in funding;
- Peoria Housing Authority (Peoria, Illinois): $47,876 in funding;
- Rock Island Housing Authority (Rock Island, Illinois): $63,816 in funding;
- Springfield Housing Authority (Springfield, Illinois): $146,080 in funding;
- Waukegan Housing Authority (Waukegan, Illinois): $49,964 in funding; and
