Child Support Debate

A bill under consideration in the Illinois House is designed to help parents who are trying to collect back child support.

When ex-spouses don't make their support payments, some parents hire private collection agencies. Those agencies, however, often keep anywhere from a third to a half of any money they collect.

A bill sponsored by state Senator Ira Silverstein would cap those fees at 25 percent. The collection agencies say that may not leave them with enough money to successfully pursue deadbeat parents.

The Senate approved the bill on a 52-0 vote. The House is expected to vote on it Tuesday.
