The bands played on through downtown as residents lined the streets to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate price in battle. This year's parade featured 12 marching bands and representatives from several veterans’ groups.

Memorial Day has an extra special meaning for veterans. They say the community has been very supportive of them.

"There really is an awful lot of really nice people here who come up and shake my hand and say thank you," said Korean War Veteran Fred Mertz.

"I think it’s great; it seems like they got more units than last year, its a little cool, last year was pretty darn hot right here," said World War II veteran George Teslik.

Teslik said his former comrades are never far from his mind.

"I fly the flag every day and I've got a chat room where I get with some buddies who were in Italy with me," he said.

Mertz said while it wasn't his choice to enlist, he doesn't regret it either.

"I was drafted, I didn't join, but I didn't go to Canada either."
