Police in Illinois and Wisconsin have started one of the largest scale enforcement efforts to date. During this year's click it or ticket campaign there will be five thousand police enforcement zones throughout Illinois.
There are a dozen a day in Winnebago County alone. Nearly one in five people don't wear seatbelts. But that's a great improvement since 1994 when more than one in three people didn't buckle up.
Some of the rules have changed since many of us started driving. "All front seat passengers have to be belted and all children under 16 have to wear seat belts regardless of their placement in the vehicle. All children under eight have to have a booster seat or car seat," said Sgt. Stephen Depauw.
Tickets for not wearing a seatbelt can range from $10 to $249.
