Flights Diverted To Rockford

Plane, after plane after plane, five in all were diverted from Chicago to Rockford because of weather. That left five to six hundred extra passengers on the Chicago Rockford International Airport’s runway. And when flights were canceled 90 people decided to get off the tarmac to fend for themselves.

Though it is a little extra work, it's actually a blessing for RFD. Every plane that lands pays a landing fee to the airport. That fee is based on the size and weight of the aircraft. In exchange for a few extra headaches, Wednesday's unanticipated flights made the airport a couple thousand dollars. Though those headaches were shared among travelers and airport employee's not every one was stressed.

Many people car pooled in taxis and rental cars to O’Hare others went to the clock tower to catch a bus. That evening, 32 busses came directly to the airport to pick up the rest of the stranded passengers.
