There were a few tense moments at the Public Safety Building in downtown Rockford Tuesday morning.
A man entered with a World War Two era mortar round he found at Atwood Park. The man said he brought the two-foot long ordinance to the police department to have it disposed for public safety reasons, and fearing the ordinance could explode, the sheriff's department closed down entrances to the building and state street in front.
The county bomb squad was called in to retrieve the device. The sheriff's department says if you find something you suspect is a military ordinance or a bomb, call law enforcement.
An explosive team from Fort McCoy is on the way to Rockford right now to investigate the device. They'll determine if the mortar round should be destroyed here or taken back to Wisconsin.
