Monday’s is the deadline for seniors to enroll in a prescription drug benefit plan. Many have waited until the last minute saying it's just too confusing.
Experts say the web is the best way to sign up because on Medicare.gov you can narrow your options down based on the three c's: cost, coverage and whether your drug is covered. You can also tell whether the plan is accepted at your local pharmacy. Most people have 40 options to choose from. Those who do not have credible coverage or don't qualify for subsidy groups should sign up.
Bob Cleveland, with the Northern Illinois Area Agency on Aging says, "They are not eligible for State of Illinois program, their income is higher than $21,000 if single and $28,000 if married. Those individuals right now should call 1-800-MEDICARE and they have operators standing by to help people get in a plan."
Experts say even if you're healthy now, go ahead and sign up for one of the low cost plans so you won't be penalized down the road. The next opportunity to join comes in November.
