The peak season for severe weather is April, May and June here in Illinois.
While our main weapon in our battle against severe weather is Doppler radar the National Weather Service still relies heavily on the public to check out what might be happening under the radar beam.
One of the most well known tornados in our area happened in April of 1967. A tornado ripped through Belvidere leaving 25 people dead and hundreds injured. In order to look out for these twisters, Stephenson County is looking for some good spotters.
If you would like to become a tornado spotter the classes are Monday in Freeport from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Call 235-8275 for more details.
