Budget Cuts Slash Education Plans

State budget cuts are being felt all across the stateline and one local college is feeling the crunch.

Northern Illinois University was preparing to cut about $10 million for this upcoming fiscal year. But, with Governor Ryan’s last round of cuts the university now must cut an additional $3.3 million; yet another repercussion of the state's budget woes.

With summer classes already in session, campus department heads are being asked to cut an additional 1.5 percent from their budgets for this fall.

NIU president John Peters says the cuts shouldn't entail any layoffs and the university will not increase tuition, what might happen is that class sizes could get larger which will have a direct effect on students.

The final division cuts aren't expected from campus departments until next week.
