A Robbery That Turned Into a Murder

A 24-year-old Rockford man has been convicted of murdering a 19-year-old college student in what prosecutors characterized as a bungled robbery.

Judge Grant Wegner convicted Robert Guyton, Jr. of eight of 19 counts against him, including six counts of first-degree murder in the death of David Steeves. Prosecutors say Guyton and 26-year-old Armin Henderson targeted the Elgin Community College student for robbery as he left a friend's house.

They forced Steeves into the trunk of his mother's car and someone shot him in the head after he made a panicked 911 call for help on his cell phone. His body was found a week later here in Rockford. Henderson still faces trial.
