UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Crews are starting to tear down a section of the City Market that collapsed over the summer.

The Water Street Parking Deck, across from the Rockford Register Star building fell apart in August, causing the upper level to collapse onto a car.

The city used half a million dollars in grant money to pay for the repairs.

UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – For the first time in four years, families heading to City Market won’t be able to hang out at one of the main spots, after part of the structure collapses.

There are 65 vendors along Water Street tonight and the new setup has many of them extending south toward East State Street. This is where the live music will now be, as well as adult beverages.

Vendors are selling as usual, with different space to work with. This comes after a chunk of concrete fell through to the lower level, hitting a car earlier this week. Public Works says the mishap happened due to the age of the structure. Some vendors are just waiting to see what happens with the new setup.

"It's going to be interesting to see how much beer we really sell today and how the line affects the market here because we're going to be a bottle neck once we get 50, 60 people in line here,” said Reed Sjostrom, Vice President of the Rockford Brewing Company.

The parking deck was scheduled to be torn down in the fall, but will now be demolished sooner. We’re told the bidding process for the demolition is underway and will probably take at least a month, so the spot will remain condemned for a little longer.

City Market will still continue as scheduled, every Friday from 3-8 p.m. After Labor Day, the Market only stays open until 7 p.m. Meanwhile, if you’re heading down for Friday Night Flix, the movie is expected to start around 7:45.

UPDATE: The City of Rockford has condemned the Water Street Parking Deck. A piece from the deck broke off due to old age, falling through to the first level on top of a car.

The city says the pavement failure was directly attributed to the age of the 35 year old deck, which was scheduled for demolition in the fall of 2014. The parking deck is usually used for City Market on Fridays, but organizers say they are putting together a plan for where to relocate the affected vendors.

The 29 people that have parking permits for the lot have been relocated to the Rockford Register Star parking lot off of Madison Street. Some of the permit holders with more limited mobility will be allowed to park in the main lot of the Rockford Register Star. Those holding the permits for the Water Street deck will be granted a grace period for the remainder of the week if forced to park on the street for longer than the defined time frame. Parking limits will be enforced again the week of August 25, 2014. Only individuals displaying a permit for the Water Street Deck will be granted the grace period.

Guests visiting downtown are encouraged to utilize the parking available on State Street and on the surrounding streets. City-owned surface lots can be found on the east-end of State Street, on Madison and behind City Hall.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A structural failure has caused a part of the Water Street Parking Deck to collapse.

Rockford Public Works Director Tim Hanson says the deck will not be repaired by this Friday and cannot be used for the upcoming City Market. It’s unclear if the City Market will go on without using the deck.
