UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A gun safe found in the Kiswaukee River has come up empty for investigators.

Crews say it was full of sheets of paper and a whole lot of mud. Detectives say sometimes burglars will steal safes, take the guns and then dump the safe.

Investigators say it’s still unclear where the safe came from but that it appeared it had been in the water for some time.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Fire Department has recovered a gun safe from the Kishwaukee River near the airport.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says it was spotted last night and the fire department pulled it out of the river late this morning.

There's no word yet on whether there were guns inside. Detectives say sometimes burglars will steal safes, take the guns, and then dump the safe, however they don't yet if that's the case in this instance.
