WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Next time we get a speeding ticket in Illinois we won't have to hand over our driver’s license for officers to keep until our court date.
Under a new law drivers will only have to sign their ticket as a guarantee they'll appear in court or pay a fine. Before, with certain traffic offenses officers would keep our driver’s license as bail.
Governor Pat Quinn says the change helps us hold onto that vital piece of identification, but still allows officers to do their jobs.
The sign and drive legislation takes effect immediately.
