A 12-year-old girl is dead and one man in custody after a car accident in downtown Rockford Sunday night.

Rockford police say the blue Chevy Beretta ran the stop sign at the intersection of north Court Street and Fisher.

The Beretta slammed into the passenger side of the car driven by Lizabeth Whelpley. Her 12-year-old daughter Helen was in the front passenger seat. Helen was rushed to Rockford Memorial Hospital where she died of head and neck injuries. Lizabeth Whelpley was treated and released.

The driver of the Beretta ran off from the scene, but Rockford police caught up with him later

About two and a half hours later, police took 21-year-old Librado Pasailles into custody--he was found at a home in the 600 block of 6th Avenue.

Pasailles is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, disobeying a stop sign, no driver's license or insurance. There was also an outstanding warrant out against him.
