Arrest in Beloit Murder

Detectives and patrol officers from the Beloit Police took Shawn Odell Brooks, D.O.B. 04/21/71 of 1864 ½ Park Street in Beloit into custody at an east side gas station shortly after 6 p.m. Monday for questioning concerning the homicide of Ms. Julienne E. McGuire on 03/27/06.

The arrest of Shawn Brooks is based upon probable cause stemming from DNA evidence analyzed by scientists at the State of Wisconsin Crime Lab in Madison, Wisconsin.

Chief Sam Lathrop received the suspect identification information via telephone from the crime lab mid afternoon of April 24. Shawn Odell Brooks has a criminal history with the Beloit Police Department and the State of Wisconsin.

Specific information concerning the DNA evidence and processes used by the crime lab identifying this suspect will not be released today. The arrest of Shawn Brooks does not conclude the investigation as there are many interviews to undertake and more evidence to process.

During the evening of Monday April 24, Beloit police officers, used as evidence technicians, conducted two simultaneous searches of residences occupied by Shawn Brooks. Results of the searches are not being released as the investigation continues.

Immediate family members were notified last night of the arrest.

In another area of this ongoing investigation, the estranged boyfriend of Ms. McGuire was cooperative with a final interview Friday, April 21. It is not likely he will need to be interviewed again.

New information about this investigation will not be released before Friday, April 28.
