Alternative energies have taken center stage in the stateline recently. The proposed ethanol plant on Rockford’s west side is still a controversy, just about every county in the area has discussed possible wind farms, and research is continuing to be done on biomass in Belvidere.
All those green fuels could be researched at this new center as well. One of the most cutting edge fuel sources is hydrogen power. A hydrogen fueling station at the airport has been discussed for some time. This new technology is anticipated to be introduced into the Stateline by our local governments operating a limited number of hydrogen fueled vehicles.
Another alternative fuel source that could be used is methane from a nearby landfill. The first step in this project will be to use $150,000 to study the viability of the center.
