Chris Robey takes her seat at the dispatcher's desk at Freeport's City Service Cab. It's the same seat she had Tuesday afternoon looking out this window at far different scene the next day.
"Cops were everywhere, swat, assault rifles," Robey said.
On Tuesday, authorities shut down the area after reports of a shooting near the Sauer Danfoss plant, across the street from Robey's cab company. Witnesses say they heard at least one shot fired and saw a white male in a red shirt on this land next to the plant. He was armed with a long gun.
"We had to lock ourselves in. We weren't allowed to come out," Robey said.
The sheriff's office questioned a person of interest Tuesday night, but they've since cleared that man. The plant manager says based on undisclosed information..."We feel there's no issue with safety with the plant employees. We're working in collaboration with the sheriff to confirm a theory." Still, with a suspect at large, folks like Robey remain on edge.
"I really hope there's not another day like that in my life time," Robey said.
And keep her seat at the dispatch desk on more routine calls for cabs.
The plant manager says there's been lots of rumors flying around about what happened on Tuesday. He ruled out one Wednesday, saying there was no disgruntled emplopyee firing the gun.
