Some day I-pass holders will be able to breeze past tolls at highway speed. Unfortunately, that day has not yet come, and delays are expected.
Both the South Beloit and Belvidere tolls are completely being rebuilt as part of a $5.3 billion plan to begin open road tolling. Congestion around the tolls is expected off and on as lanes are narrowed and road crews work through the summer.
Though some delays are unavoidable the state will be suspending construction over the holiday weekend to allow for a smoother ride. The Illinois Tollway Authority is asking for your cooperation in taking a little extra time planning your trip.
The busiest traffic will be Friday through Sunday as travelers drive to and from Wisconsin for the weekend. The state suggests holiday travelers try to leave a little early on Friday and consider coming back late Sunday night to avoid the rush.
