Planned repair work on the Mississippi River's Wood River Levee near Alton has restarted after it was halted by flooding. The levee district protects 23,000 residents. Officials say the restoration and rehabilitation project should take about two years. The goal is upgrade the levee to be able to withstand a 500-year flood, which would have an overall cost of $34 million. The cost is to be shared among the district, property taxes and the federal government. Drilling work had started on the project in April, but had to stop when the Mississippi River flooded.
