The Elder Abuse Hotline will be staffed 24 hours a day by trained caseworkers. They'll be able to take reports of elder abuse or exploitation and contact the correct authorities.
Victims of elder abuse or anyone who suspects such a crime are urged to call the Illinois Department on Aging at 866-800-1409.
Department Director Charles Johnson says only about one-in-ten cases of abuse are reported. And he says he hopes the hotline's convenience will compel more people to come forward.
After getting a call, caseworkers will try to determine what can be done to solve the problem. Seniors may be offered legal help, in home health care, housing assistance or other services.
(The hotline is 866-800-1409 or TTY at 800-544-5304. On the Net: www.state.il.us/aging)
