UPDATE: Police say a semi-truck driver was speeding when he crashed into a car on Bypass 20, causing a chain reaction and sending two people to the hospital.
The out-of-state trucker rolled into three cars waiting at the traffic light at Winnebago Corners, shutting the intersection down for hours. All four drivers are okay.
UPDATE: Police say the man who had to be extricated from a car and airlifted to the hospital after being hit by a semi truck has been treated and released.
The crash that sent him and another driver to the hospital around 1:30 this afternoon. Reconstruction teams with Winnebago County are still figuring out what triggered the chain reaction involving the semi and three other cars. They think the semi may have run a red light as it was headed west on U.S. 20, rear ending a gold car and two other vehicles.
Two drivers were taken to the hospital. Police are still trying to determine if the semi's brakes were out when it crashed.
The blocked lanes at U.S. Route 20 and Winnebago Road are now open.
WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) – One person is fighting to survive and another is sent to the hospital after a semi-truck slams into a car at Winnebago Corners.
The Bypass 20 and Winnebago Road intersection remains closed at this hour as police reconstruct the scene. Investigators are trying to figure out whether the truck’s brakes were working. Right now, all lanes of traffic are closed between Keith Road and Weldon Road.
The accident happened just after 1:30 p.m. A REACT helicopter arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. At this point, we now that two of the four people involved were injured in the accident. Illinois State Police think the semi may have run a red light, crashing into the other cars.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, more than 17,000 cars and 2,700 semis pass through that intersection every day.
WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Police are on the scene of a multi-vehicle accident involving a semi and three other cars on Rt. 20 and Winnebago Road.
The crash happened just before 2:00 p.m. Illinois State Police say they are investigating this crash.
They tell us a semi and three passenger cars were involved. One person was airlifted to a local hospital from the scene and another was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Two others injured in the crash declined medical treatment at the scene.
Investigators believe the semi, which was heading westbound on U.S. 20, rear-ended the three other vehicles involved. Reconstruction teams are on the scene to figure out if the semi's brakes were out, possibly causing the accident.
All lanes of traffic are closed at this time between Keith Rd and Weldon Rd, and will remain so while the crash scene is investigated. Traffic that cannot avoid this area will be redirected. Please avoid this area if at all possible.
