Belvidere Gang Graffiti

Belvidere residents have seen a spike in vandalism recently. But Belvidere police say they know how to solve the problem.

They're stepping up gang graffiti patrols a month early. Gangs have vandalized several houses and businesses - and even a church - in the last few days.

Police say gang members in Belvidere have connections to Rockford, Elgin, west Chicago and Beloit. But the gangs face a major obstacle... The Belvidere police gang unit.

Four additional officers will now be assigned to patrol for gangs.

"We send our officers to advanced training to learn about gang culture and we have a zero tolerance approach for enforcement," says Sgt. Mark Pollock.

Police start their extra patrols on April 1st.
