The southbound lanes in the 5600 block of 11th Street have been off limits to drivers since 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. Rockford Police say three teens were in this car traveling southbound on 11th Street. Witnesses say they saw the car traveling at a high rate of speed and was weaving in and out of traffic. The car left the roadway, went into the grassy median and flipped. Inside the car a 17-year-old male who was behind the wheel. He died on scene. Police say a 13-year-old boy who was the drivers step-brother was ejected from the back seat. A 14 year old girl was trapped in the front seat. The 13 and 14-year-old were taken to Swedish American Hospital and then transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital. Both are in critical condition.
Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark says, "It's a privilege to drive. Parents need to talk to kids about the responsibility of driving. There are more distractions than ever before and it's so important that parents reiterate that they should be focused on one thing, safely driving the automobile."
This is the 3rd fatal accident in Rockford this year. In 2005 the City of Rockford recorded 16 fatal accidents and 14 in 2004.
