Deputy Injured While Investigating Car Crash

Dense fog this morning may have contributed to an accident that seriously injured a Boone County Sheriff's Deputy. It happened early this morning just south of Belvidere. Deputy Christian Leonard remains hospitalized in serious condition at an area hospital. Police say at around 3 a.m. this morning near Genoa Road and Reeds Crossing, Leonard was on the scene of a car accident talking to his sergeant. Police say Leonard was standing outside the driver's side door of the sergeant’s car when a car driven by Beverly Tanner of Rockford ran into him. Witnesses say it appeared the impact was at about 50 miles an hour. Leonard bounced off the windshield, and was tossed to the pavement. The sergeant on scene also sustained minor injuries. State police say they have arrested Tanner for not slowing down and pulling over to avoid emergency workers.
