IL School Funding

Senate Democrats have a message for Gov. Blagojevich -- don't mess with school funding this year.

Democrats Tuesday say they will push a law guaranteeing that schools get more than $260 million in funding they're counting on this year.

That change would force the governor to come up with the extra money while trying to solve a budget deficit of billions of dollars.

Schools usually get two extra payments from the state at the end of the fiscal year in June to help them hire teachers and make other plans for the next school year.

But state and local education officials say they fear the state won't pay out this year because of the budget shortfall.

The Democrat measure would require the state to make the payments and guarantee that schools receive the same amount of funding each year.
