Division of Insurance Director Michael McRaith last week required the state's major malpractice insurer IS-MIE Medical Insurance Company to freeze its rates for next year and offer new discounts.
McRaith was given the new authority in a law approved last year designed to lower rates that have driven dozens of doctors out of the state.
McRaith says in an interview with the Associated Press that the order is a reasonable and objective solution to offering relief for doctors without crippling the company financially.
The director says he understands IS-MIE isn't entirely happy with the result but says his office will enforce the order to make sure doctors see the benefits.
