It was a day by the curb for these clean-up workers. Picking up flood damaged debris from Machesney Park homes, and tossing it onto garbage trucks. "This load here was a lot of plaster, it's got plywood, so it's going to weigh more," IDOT Driver Linus Williams said. Williams of Oregon was among 18 Winnebago County and IDOT "truckers," hauling away street-lined piles of garbage Wedensday to the Winnebago landfill. On this trip, he unloaded some 3,300 pounds of trash. Overall, Williams says his loads grew bigger as he drove around the Shore Drive neighborhood. "The first load was about what I expected, but when we got closer to the river, there was more of it and just coming out now, there's bigger piles than I thought I'd see," Williams said. He was surprised to see items like clothing and books in the piles of trash. There was also a picnic basket, wrapping paper and a collection of National Geographic magazines. "I'm sure there's a lot of their stuff that can never be replaced. I'm sure that has a lot of meaning to them," Williams said. Williams says this clean-up duty is mainly a job for him. But he says If it helps out, he's happy to do his part, and slowly make these piles of trash disappear. "I don't know if you get satisfaction out of other's people misery. But at least it's helping them with the cost of cleanup," Williams said. These crews are also helping with tree debris that fell from the recent storms this week and picking up sandbags. They'll be back out on the streets Thursday. Their service is free to residents.
