Chick-fil-A Opens in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – With some people in the Stateline without work or school due to frigid temperatures, they took to Chick-fil-A for some chicken to stay warm.

Employees at Rockford’s newest restaurant welcomed in the first 100 people who braved the bone chilling night in tents to earn free Chick-fil-A for one year.

Mike Luke was one of those people but says it was worth the wait to get his hands on a breakfast sandwich after the restaurant opened at 6 a.m. this morning.

“I’ve never regretted it, no. I thought ‘well what am I doing here’ I thought about going home, but then I said ‘no, it’s not that bad.’ Once I was inside the bag, it was good.”

Anticipation of the grand opening started 5 months ago when construction first began and after the huddled masses shuffled through the doors to grab their food, that anticipation turned into appreciation.

“We’ve had a lot of great comments of people just being so excited that we’re in Rockford. I think a lot of people travel to the south and get to eat Chick-fil-A when they’re traveling and they’re just excited they can now eat it here in their hometown.”

In addition to the 100 who received a free meal, plenty of other empty stomachs found their way to the newly opened chicken joint.

“School got cancelled in Belvidere and Rockford and all of the surrounding areas and we were just sitting at home thinking Chick-fil-A opens today, we need to go.”

Whether you’re sleeping in a tent to get free food, paying for your food, or just avoiding the cold outside, none of that seems to matter when you have a belly full of chicken.
The weather got so unbearable during the night, staff allowed the people waiting outside to come inside to keep warm.
