STATELINE (WIFR) -- Hundreds of people packed into a local hotel today all vying for a spot on a Stateline grocery store chain’s payroll.
Dozens lined up all with different degrees of education. One man we spoke with even had a degree in finance applying to be a cashier. ALDI says they pay their employees more so they also expect more out of them.
“I have been at McDonald’s for over 7 years and as of the first of the year, they cut all of our insurance.”
Carla Sue Swimelar says she’s only received a 50 cent pay raise over the seven years she’s worked at McDonald’s and with her hours cut, she’s struggling to make ends meet.
“It seemed like after my mother died two years ago, that my hours went from 40 hours a week, to like 20 hours every two weeks.”
Swimelar says a base pay of $11.75 would give her the opportunity to stand on her own two feet again.
Hundreds of people came to today’s job fair at the Hilton Garden Inn after they found out ALDI pays their employees $3.50 over minimum wage. For a person working a 40-hour work-week, that comes to $7,000 dollars more a year than those who make minimum wage.
Pernell Hobson says the higher pay would help him make a better life for him and his children.
“I’m ready to buy a house and get my kids on the right track. This career opportunity will be a great spot for me.”
Hobson understands a cashier position at ALDI is fast paced and sometimes more stressful, but it’s a challenge he’s ready to tackle.
ALDI says to expect a call from them by the end of next week if they’re going to consider you for a position.
An ALDI spokesman says even part-time workers who are there at least 20 hours a week are eligible for full health insurance, dental coverage, and even a 401K.
STATELINE (WIFR) -- ALDI is bringing new jobs to the area with a hiring event for its Northern Illinois stores on Monday, January 20. The hiring event is for Rockford, DeKalb, Rochelle, Belvidere, Machesney Park, Freeport, Loves Park, and Sugar Grove, Illinois.
ALDI offers employees generous compensation that is well above the industry standard, such as full health insurance, dental coverage and 401K for staff working at least 20 hours a week.
ALDI invites job seekers to apply for Store Associate and Shift Manager positions at a hiring event on Monday, January 20. The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Walton Street in Rockford.
