The Harlem consolidated school district has moved into the black. For years the district had a budget deficit. Now they have a positive balance in all accounts.
So on Saturday the school board decided to fill in some of the gaps that were left by budget cuts. Board members voted to add a new math teacher and a new English teacher at Harlem high school.
They're also considering expanding special education with six more positions. The reason they can afford these additions is growth. Several new businesses and subdivisions are adding to the school's tax revenue base. Plus the state is expected to chip in more money next year.
