Instead of relying on loans and property taxes in Rockford the new plan would spread the burden across the county, and to those who don’t even live here.
Non-Winnebago County residents come to Rockford to spend money. When they do so they use the roads but don’t have to pay for there maintenance. Passing the referendum would change that by taxing the goods and services those people use. In an attempt to not drive business away, the tax won’t apply to big ticket items like titled vehicles.
As to not increase the burden for those already on a fixed income the sales tax increase wouldn’t apply to food or medicine.
The sales tax increase referendum will be on the ballot March 21.
