Belvidere Hospital?

In an emergency seconds can mean the difference between life and death. Belvidere's growth could be putting lives in danger. But rather then waiting until it's too late, the city is being pro-active. It hired the University of Illinois College of Medicine to look at what it needs to do.

Researchers say based on their surveys the major concern is emergency care. They found Boone County could support a small hospital with 30 to 50 beds.

State law requires new hospitals built near metropolitan areas to have at least 100 beds. So, instead leaders are considering a health care campus. That would include an emergency room, ambulatory surgery and diagnostic center.

Mayor Fred Brereton is reconvening a task force to consider all of Belvidere’s options.
