ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Marathon is going on hiatus.

According to a press release, a significant decrease in sponsorship is to blame. While marathon participants have increased since the race was re-launced in 2008, sponsorship money has dropped from $24,000 in 2009 to under $3,000 this year.

Organizers say they would consider holding the race next year or in 2015 if enough sponsor support comes in. They say if enough sponsorship dollars are raised in the next few months there could be a race next year, but those prospects aren't looking too good.

In 2013, nearly 1,200 runners from over 20 states participated in the Rockford Marathon. Under 250 ran the full marathon and over 600 ran the half marathon. More than 250 people participated in the 10K run.
