ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford home is considered a total loss after it caught fire early Thursday morning.

Fire officials say a neighbor reported hearing an explosion after midnight at the home in the 300 block of South Horace Avenue before seeing it on fire.

Upon arrival, the house was fully engulfed in flames and the roof had collapsed. Due to the damage, firefighters could not go into the home. The garage was also on fire. It contributed to windows breaking at a neighbor's home, too.

The fire remains under investigation. The cause has not been determined yet. Only one person lived there. He said he had left an hour or two before the fire started.

Fire crews stayed on the scene until a demolition crew arrived. No injuries were reported.

About $40,000 is estimated in damage.
