Businesses Begin Search for Holiday Help

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Rockford has the third highest unemployment rate in the state, and that means there are still a lot of people out of work. There could be some temporary relief, several local businesses are starting to hire for the holiday season.

Jenesia Manriquez is spending more time online searching for a part time job these days. She says the hours are drying up at the landscaping company where she works as a secretary, so Manriquez is looking for another seasonal gig to make sure her son has some presents under the tree this year.

"I have a two year old son, I’m thinking about getting him a little bike for the summer and some clothes. It would help out a lot if I have another part time job so I could pay for bills and the stuff that we need," says Jenesia Manriquez of Rockford.

Fortunately for Stateline job hunters, several area businesses are hiring more seasonal help this year. Kohl’s plans to put 50,000 people to work across the country this holiday season; the company is looking to hire 40 associates at each of its Stateline stores. Several jobs are available at the Carson Pirie Scott distribution center in Rockford, as well as the Bergner’s store at the CherryVale Mall. Target plans to bring on 70,000 seasonal employees nationwide; locally, the locations in Rockford and Machesney Park are hiring.

It’s not just retail stores adding to the payroll; UPS is looking for part time package handlers to work the night shift at our hub in Rockford. The company also needs full-time package delivery drivers this season.

A new study from shows almost half of hiring managers they talked to plan to offer seasonal workers full time positions after the holiday season ends.
