The small town of Dakota was sent into shock this week when one of their own was kidnapped, or so she said.
14-year-old Heather Mashaw stated on January 25, 2006 that, “It was very shocking and very scary. A lot of people say it's not going to happen to me and I admit I was one of those people."
But the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department says nothing happened to 14-year-old Heather Mashaw on January 23, 2006. 23 News interviewed Heather earlier this week after she was allegedly abducted while walking to a friend’s house after school. Heather told police law enforcement that she was forced into the back of a pick-up truck. She stated that she eventually escaped by jumping from the truck as it approached a stop sign. The Sheriff's Department says there were too many inconsistencies and after an interview Sunday afternoon Heather admitted the story was false. The Stephenson County States Attorney's office will determine if heather will be charged with transmitting a false police report.
