About a 60-acre area was on fire at Rock Cut State Park Sunday afternoon
Fire officials say it started in a valley but high winds helped spread the fire in all directions fairly quickly. Smoke filled the sky and traffic around the area was diverted.
Residents say they were concerned about the heavy gusts or the possibility of just how far the fire would spread. Tankers and grass trucks from Harlem-Roscoe and Loves Park fire were called in to battle the blaze.
Once crews arrived they say it didn't take long to contain the fire. Officials say it could have been much worse if it spread to trees.
No word on how the fire started. Police are looking into arson and have questioned two people.
