UPDATE: 8-Year Sentence for Fatal Crash

UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – One of the drivers in a fatal crash will spend eight years locked up for killing a Rockford man.

20-year-old Steven Pancyrz from New Milford pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI involving death for crashing his SUV into another car last fall.

35-year-old Richard Parker died in that accident. Police say Pancyrz rear ended the car Parker was riding in on Street and Samuelson. The driver of the second car, 38-year-old Kenneth Berg was also accused of driving drunk in that crash. He is on court supervision.

Update from Rockford Police:

At approximately 12:13 am on 09/02/2013, Rockford Police Officers were sent to the area of 5600 11th Street in reference to a traffic crash. Upon arrival, officers located a 2002 GMC Envoy (SUV) occupied by the sole driver and a 2007 Chrysler 300, occupied by four subjects in the ditch. The rear seat male passenger in the Chrysler 300 identified as 35 year old Richard E. Parker from Rockford was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the north bound Envoy driven by Steven Pancyrz, 19 years old from Rockford rear ended the Chrysler 300 driven by Kenneth J. Berg 40 years old from Harvard.

The investigation was reviewed with the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and the following charges were authorized:

Steven R. Pancyrz, M/W 19 years old, New Milford, IL
• Reckless driving,
• Reckless Homicide
• Aggravated Driving Under the Influence (DUI) involving death
• Suspended Driver’s License
• No Insurance
• Minor Drinking

Kenneth J. Berg, M/W 38 years old, Harvard, IL
• Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
• Driving Under the Influence, BAC over .08

The charges against Pancyrz and Berg are allegations and all subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Extra holiday patrols and roadside safety checks didn't appear to be enough to prevent a fatal crash on the city's south east side, and police say alcohol is likely the reason a 35 year old man was killed in the crash..

That victim is identified as Richard Parker who officers say was a passenger. Investigators tell us just after midnight an SUV rear-ended the car Parker was riding in on 11th street near Samuelson Road. The vehicles ended up in the ditch. Both drivers were hurt, but should be okay.

The crash is still under investigation.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A man is dead after a two-vehicle crash on 11th Street early Monday morning.

Police say after midnight Monday, they found an SUV and a car in the ditch in the 5600 block of 11th Street. A male passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is not being released until all family has been notified. Another passenger in the car and the driver of the SUV were taken to local hospitals. Their injuries are considered non-life threatening.

According to preliminary investigation, the SUV was heading north on 11th Street when it collided with the rear of the car. Both vehicles went off the road. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. Charges are pending.

11th Street between Samuelson and Blackhawk roads will be closed for several hours due to follow-up investigation.
