Greenwood Cemetery to Upgrade Security

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A local cemetery says they’re dealing with one of their worst messes in more than two decades with dozens of gravestones nearly destroyed by vandals. Cemetery leaders tell 23 News they’re fighting back.

“What explains a mind that will do this,” said Rockford Cemetery Association board member Mary Ann Smith.

She says it’s hard to believe anyone would vandalize dozens of gravestones for no good reason.

“This has been a real wake up call to us that we are vulnerable,” said Smith.

The cemetery association is in the process of repairing and restoring nearly 50 grave markers police say were destroyed by vandals last Wednesday. There is still no one in custody partly because police say no one saw the crime so the cemetery says they’re taking matters into their own hands. The cemetery tells 23 News they’re preparing to install more lights, raise the fences, install gates and surveillance cameras at each entrance.

The association says they feel the added security should help police track down anyone who breaks in to the cemetery. The cost of the upgrades is still unknown and there’s no official word on when the upgrades will be installed, but Smith says the board would like to do so as soon as possible.
