UPDATE: Police say the driver of a car that smashed into a residence at the intersection of N. Rockton Ave and Overdene Street has died.
The accident happened August 18th around 5 a.m. The driver, 19-year-old Devonte Townsend of Rockford, was traveling north on N. Rockton Ave. at high rate of speed, lost control of his vehicle prior to leaving the roadway and crashed into the house. He was then extricated from the car and taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.
On August 27th, 2013 hospital personnel contacted the Rockford Police Department saying Townsend had died from his injuries suffered in the crash.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Police say a car heading north bound on Rockton Ave smashed into the side of a residence just before 5am Sunday at the intersection of North Rockton Ave and Overdene Street. The house hit resides on the 3000 block of N. Rockton Ave.
Rescue crews had to extricate the driver from the vehicle, who has been identified as 19-year-old Devonte Townsend. He was transported to a local hospital and was last listed in serious condition.
The path the vehicle took on its way to hitting the residence is clearly present on the road. From Rockton Ave, skid marks line the street to a tree that was hit and front lawns have tire tracks marking the path the car took before ramming into the residence leaving a hole in the side of the complex.
The woman living in the residence that was hit by the car was sleeping at the time of the accident. Her friends say her bed was moved about a foot as a result of impact, but she was not injured.
Police are still investigating. We're told it is believed alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.
