JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- School District of Janesville Superintendent Karen Schulte is recommending Deanne Edlefsen to the Board of Education for the position of Roosevelt Elementary School Principal.
If approved by the School Board at the July 9, 2013 regular board meeting, Edlefsen will begin her duties at Roosevelt Elementary School on August 12, 2013.
Edlefsen served as a high school teacher for the Anoka-Hennepin School District (MN) from 1997-2000. Edlefsen served as a middle school teacher (2000-2005) and as a middle school assistant principal (2005-2006) for the Beaufort School District (SC). She has served as a middle school teacher (2006-2008) and was asked to be the Dean of Students (2008-2010) at McNeel Middle School for the Beloit School District. Edlefsen has been the Assistant Principal at Edison Middle School in Janesville since 2010. Edlefsen also holds the distinction of being a National Board Certified teacher which means she has successfully participated in a rigorous process of developing her teacher pedagogy.
Edlefsen received a BA degree in Interdisciplinary Studies/Anthropology from St. Cloud State University (1989) and a MSEd in Leadership K-12 Programs from Capella University (2005). She received National Teacher Certification (2004) and recently completed courses through Edgewood College for certification as Director of Instruction.
Edlefsen’s recommendation of appointment is based on her strong teaching experience, knowledge of curriculum and participation in programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB) and leadership in the development and implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) at Edison Middle School. She has a high standard of excellence for students and staff with a desire for all to succeed, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills.
Superintendent Karen Schulte stated: “Ms. Edlefsen possesses the experience, dedication and leadership skills necessary to effectively serve the staff, students and parents of Roosevelt Elementary School. I see Roosevelt Elementary School as one of those hidden gems where the community at large doesn’t see all the great things that are happening there. It is time for Roosevelt to receive the recognition it is due and be recognized throughout the state and nation. I believe Deanne has the vision, tenacity and skill to carry Roosevelt Elementary School’s message and develop it into one of the highest performing schools in the nation. She will be a great addition to the Roosevelt Team.”
There were twenty-nine (29) applicants for the position of Roosevelt Elementary School Principal. The applicants were narrowed to eight (8) for further review. Five (5) applicants were interviewed by a team comprised of: Dr. Karen Schulte (superintendent), Drs. Stephen Sperry and Yolanda Cargile (directors), Keith Pennington (CFO), Dr. Barbara Kelley (supervisor).
Following the initial interviews, the team submitted the names of two (2) applicants to the Peer Interview team. The Peer Interview team was comprised of: Veronica McMahon (principal), Amy Sheridan (curriculum coordinator), Lori Lowe, Lynn Little, Shelley Lemirande (teachers), Tarah Thompson (student services specialist), Nikki Kendall (parent) and Steve Sperry (director).
It is recommended Edlefsen be given a 2-year contract upon Board approval. The contract will begin with the 2013-14 school year. She will work 218.5 days per contract year. It is recommended she receive a salary of $94,000 for the 2013-14 school year.
