UPDATE: A man has been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run that killed a motorcyclist late Wednesday night.
Police say Ryan T. Banks has been taken into custody. He is being charged with failure to stop after having an accident involving injury or death, driving while license is revoked and failure to yield while turning left in front of oncoming traffic.
The investigation remains ongoing.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Rockford Police continue their search for the driver of a fatal hit-and- run motorcycle accident on the City's southeast side. Investigators say they know who the car belongs to and are now trying to find the person behind the wheel during last night's crash.
A battered bike turned on its side in the middle of 11th Street is what’s left of 45-year-old Scott Zwiefelhofer’s last ride. Family members say he was riding home from work when an SUV smashed into him. Police say the driver left him to die. The fatal hit-and-run accident comes at a time when hundreds of motorcyclists are taking their bikes out for the first ride of the season. Bob Nordvall is the former president of ABATE. The avid rider says he is more cautious than ever on our roads. He feels drivers stopped paying attention years ago.
“It’s a big issue, the people today are constantly not watching for us and I feel one of the big issues is talking or texting while driving.”
Nordvall says distracted driving is such a big problem, he once saw a man reading a novel while behind the wheel and believes more needs to be done to save lives.
“We don’t stand a chance if we go up against the car. We have nothing and usually it becomes fatal for us,” Nordvall said.
That was the case early Thursday morning when Zwiefelhofer lost his life. His family, who nicknamed him Z-man says he was a devoted hockey fan, friend, and father who will be greatly missed. They are now hoping for justice.
Police found the suspect’s SUV this morning near the crash site. We’re told the driver’s license plate came off during the crash, so investigators were able to find the owner and are now looking for the driver.
