Homeless Teens

Homeless teens, it's a concept most of us don't think about, but unfortunately it's a reality. The numbers are staggering, there are 25,000 homeless youths ages 12 to 21 in Illinois.

That's up nearly 4,000 from when the last survey was taken in 1985. Shelter employees from the Rockford Rescue mission believe the increase is due some well know causes...broken families, ended relationships, drug addiction, and lack of community support.

Patrick Clinton, Senior Program Director of the Rockford Rescue Mission says, "Many of them are left feeling powerless, alone, and many need to hear that someone believes in them.”

Currently, the shelter serves more homeless men, compared to women.

Today's report also notes more than one third of homeless young adults are former wards of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
