When it comes to our strengths and weaknesses, Illinois and Wisconsin are polar opposites.
A national health foundation reports that violent crime is a major problem in Illinois, even though it declined by 13 percent this year. In Wisconsin there is so little violence that it helped the state earn a rank of 13th healthiest state in the nation.
Illinois went up a point to be ranked at 28th this year. One reason for the boost is because our smoking rate dropped from 24 percent to 22 percent. Another improvement, we are taking our doctor's advice and becoming more active.
A big concern throughout the country is obesity. The amount of obese people in Illinois and Wisconsin has more than doubled since 19-90. That statistic has a lot of doctors worried.
Minnesota got the highest ranking... And Louisiana and Mississippi were at the bottom of the list. That was in part due to the devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. You can find out where all the states stand by logging on www.americashealthrankings.org
