Hynes to seek third term as state comptroller

The comptroller is the official in charge of paying the state's bills. That gives him the opportunity to see where money is going and call attention to financial problems.

Hynes says he has made the comptroller's office more efficient -- doubling the number of electronic payments it makes every year.

He has also advocated measures to help balance the state budget and has sometimes criticized Governor Rod Blagojevich, a fellow Democrat.

On the Republican side, state Senator Carole Pankau says she plans to run for comptroller too.
